In
an effort to make his presence in the NASCAR Super Late Model Division
at Irwindale Speedway, Robby Sawyer put one in the books Saturday
night and qualified at an 18.047. The qualifying time was his fastest
of the season and the time would place his #98 on the front row
of the starting grid in the Twin 50s main event. The car was fast,
stated crew chief Kelly Sawyer. "On friday night we practiced
with a new set of tires which is rare for our team because we operate
on a limited race budget. We wanted to make some adjustments and
do some testing to get the setup where we needed. After Saturday's
practice we made more adjustments and after qualifying we realized
we hit the setup where it needed to be. Robby was smooth in qualifying,
the car never bobbled and the times revealed this. We continue to
learn but Friday's practice really helped the team."

Thirty cars lined up for the evening's main event. The #91 driven
by 2006 Southwest Tour Champion,
Rip Michels sat on the pole with Sawyer taking the outside.
When the green was dropped Sawyer took the lead coming out of the
first turn on lap one but a spin of carsin the rear of the pack
brought out a complete restart. When the green fell again Rip Michels
took the lead followed by Sawyer. With the tight running pack there
was a shuffling of positions and Sawyer went high as several cars
got under him (McGill, Van Knill). By lap twenty Sawyer was
running fifth. On lap 22 Price got around Sawyer and took over fifth.
After a restart off the yellow Sawyer was gaining on the #43 car
of Van Knill who was now running fifth, as he pulled his #98 closer
with each lap. But on lap 37 the inevitable occurred as Sawyer's
car just quit on the back stretch and he pulled into the infield.
Sawyer's motor had gone away and it was later discovered that there
was now a rod was lying in the oil pan. "We are not sure how
much damage there is yet but we know it's "hurt", stated
crew chief Kelly Sawyer. For we all know the famous saying, "If
we didn't have any bad luck we'd have no luck at all". This
could have been the motto for the team the last few races of the
season as the team confronted other mechanical problems." It's
hard when your on a limited budget but we will continue to move
forward. The equipment went away tonight, the driver did an awesome
job of performing. Robby does a great job with what we can give
him, tonight proves this. Our plans now are to put in the back-up
motor and get ready for the November race in Vegas. Robby was fast
last year in Vegas in his rookie season, he adapted to the track
very well, I am just excited to see what he will do this year with
two seasons under his belt on pavement." states Kelly.
On another note, we would like to thank all those who have supported
and helped us out this year. Robby has posted a special message
to everyone at www.latemodelracer.com so please take a moment
to read. Thanks again and see everyone in VEGAS!!
SAWYER TAKES SECOND AT IRWINDALE
July 29,
2006
After
a year and a half of hard work and learning the transition from
dirt to pavement former Dirt Track Champion Robby Sawyer finished
second place Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway in the NASCAR
Super Late Model Division. Race fans and family knew he was getting
faster every week but his performance this past weekend elevated
to the top of his class. The performance of his driving ability
began early in the day when Sawyer pulled onto the track and qualified
fifth at 18.447. The competition is close and there is no room for
errors as the final qualifying times in the top eight were separated
by thousands of a second. The top six qualifiers would run a six
lap shoot out trophy dash where Sawyer finished third. The trophy
dash gave Robby an idea of what the main event starting position
would make on his decisions and what might be expected in the main
event.
A
reverse six of qualifying order was drawn and this would now start
Sawyer on the outside pole of the grid for the main event. The green
flag was thrown but a crash in the middle of the field saw a yellow
come out as the cars would once again take the green for a complete
restart. On lap two Sawyer moved into first and held the lead for
two laps when he was passed by the six car of David Beat. Sawyer
tucked behind Beat and the two seemed as they were working together
as they began to pull away from the remainder of the field. Sawyer
began to experience break problems on lap 20 and was radioed that
they were glowing red. On
lap 28 a second yellow was thrown when a car spun in between turns
three and four. When the green flag flew again Sawyer was now faced
with two problems; one was the break problems or lack of breaks
and two having the field bunched up again after having a successful
lead on the field. On the restart the #25 car made an inside attempt
to pass Sawyer but Sawyer drove a smooth line and it didn't take
Robby no time before he got back in the preferred groove of the
track. Sawyer began to pull away and at times look to be closing
in on Beat but then several laps later would fall off the pace shortening
his lead over the third place car. What was learned after the race
was Sawyer had lost his breaks and was compensating his speed to
cool down the little breaks he had. Later In an interview with the
Los Angeles Times a reporter asked, "If you had not lost your
breaks do you think you would caught David Beat?" "Yes,
stated Sawyer, without any hesitation, there is no doubt in my mind."

Tonight
was the twenty-one year olds best finish to date in the NASCAR Super
Late Model Division. "Were up against some teams with Big Sponsors
and crews and our team is a family and hometown (Bakersfield) supported
operation. I know Robby is capable of performing and tonight proves
it as he ran the fastest lap in the main event at an 18.81 lap time.
It just takes someone recognizing his talent and to give him an
opportunity to further his racing career," stated crew Chief
Kelly Sawyer. Sawyer will compete again at Irwindale Speedway on
August 19, 2006.
On another note: The race team would like
to thank the following people for their help in the pits and on
the radio at this evening's race: Kevin, Dave, Bruce, and Johnny....your
help was appreciated! We would also like to thank Diane, Manager
of BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse in Arcadia for being there tonight
and all the great food you feed our team!

NASCAR Super Late Models competed
Saturday night with a 25 car field turn out. Sawyer qualified his
best time of the season placing him in the 11th starting position
in the main event. However, a disqualification of another driver moved
Sawyer up in the starting field in the 10th starting position (fifth
row). The performance of the evening came around lap ten when Sawyer
was hit by the six car of David Beat and it sent him into a spin.
Sawyer did a complete 360 coming out of turn four at 90 plus miles
an hour and continued forward as the yellow was thrown. Sawyer and
Beat were moved to the back of the pack because they brought out the
yellow. "It was a quick call to throw the yellow because we could
see multiple accidents but we didn't think Sawyer would be able to
save it", stated one official. In the next five laps Sawyer began
to pass as he picked off a car a lap and was moving up the pack. By
lap twenty he was in 16th position and went inside the 97 car to move
into 14th when the two got together bringing out a yellow. On the
restart Sawyer was at the back of the field and again began to pass
when he started having problems with his breaks. Sawyer finally pulled
into the infield on lap 36 as a result of losing his breaks. "The
breaks were gone," states Robby. The car was fast tonight, the
fastest it has been this year, we have finally hit the set-up and
are looking forward to the next race, stated crew chief Kelly Sawyer.
Sawyer competes again on July 29th at Irwindale but will be running
the Super Street Stock, owned by Scott Schweitzer, in Bakersfield
next weekend and then the Late Model owned by Don Hampl of Atascadero
the following weekend. It's a busy season for the team.

Twenty-two cars showed up for
the NASCAR Super Late Model Main Event. Sawyer started the main
event in the 18th position. A first lap accident before turn one
involved several cars get tangled up when one of the cars missed
a shift because of an earlier transmission problem. The accident
had Sawyer making a quick decision as he took the pit exit to miss
flying debris. Sawyer pulled back onto the track during the yellow
and the field took a complete restart of the main event. Sawyer's
fast lap came on lap four at 18.544 and averaged 97.066 miles per
hour during the race. Sawyer's car seemed to be working great as
he moved onto the scoreboard for the first time this season holding
the tenth position on the marquee. What the crew did not know was
Robby was struggling with a handling problem because of the car
being very loose. It became evident to his crew chief when several
times out of turn two Sawyer had the car almost sideways as he saved
the car from hitting the wall. With fifteen laps to go Sawyer's
handling problems increased as he lost three positions. Sawyer finished
thirteenth in the fifty lap main event. "That was one loose
racecar," Sawyer told his spotter Kevin over the radio. The
Super Late Models will race again on July 8, 2006 and Sawyer plans
to be there.

2006- Accident Leaves Sawyer Sandwiched at Irwindale
The continuous race season of
aggressive drivers and accidents saw only twenty one cars showing
up to compete in the.Super Late Models on Saturday night. Sawyer qualifying
13th position for the main event became a victim of some of the lack
of patience some of the drivers are having this race season."
It's a fifty lap main event and this type of driving cost people a
lot of money" said crew chief Kelly Sawyer. "They keep tearing
cars up because of lack of patience" added Sawyer. As a result,
Sawyer became the meat in the sandwich and was not able to finish
the race.
After a lap two accident the Super Late Models took a single file
restart. On lap 23 Sawyer was passing the 45 car of Mike Mulhall on
the inside when Corey Fancy tried to make it three wide on the bottom
straddling the white line underneath Sawyer. With the drivers now
three wide at 90 plus miles an hour in turn four, Mulhull was now
trying to avoid being passed. Robby was now pinched down while at
the same time Fancy pushed up from the bottom and made contact with
Sawyer sending him into Mulhull who ened up backing his car into the
wall taking Sawyer with him. Sawyer suffered damage to the front nose
of his car. With the yellow flag thrown, Sawyer back up his car from
the accident and drove to the hot lane of the pits to let crew access
the damage to see if he could continue the race. A pit crew member
then saw too much damage for Sawyer to continue and Robby pulled into
the pits for the evening. This is why we only have 21 cars tonight,
it's a stupid move for a driver to make on a 50 lap race stated one
of the crew members. Van Neal won the 50 lap race with Him McGill,
David Beat, Mike Price and David Ross rounding out the top five finishers.
The Super Late Models will race again on June 24th.

Twenty-six cars showed
up to compete in the NASCAR Super Late Models on Saturday night. Sawyer
started twenty-first and finished an impressive 16 th avoiding several
on track crashes. Sawyers best lap cam on lap 27 with a 18.516 at
97.213 miles per hour. Sawyer continues to show improvement in his
pavement driving skills. "This is the third of three races that
we have finished and the car is beginning to feel comfortable to my
driving style,"states Robby. Sawyer will compete again at Irwindale
the first weekend of June. We are running a limited schedule due to
the fact we are still seeking a tire sponsor, says crew chief, Kelly
Sawyer . Sawyer will fill in his race schedule by running the dirt
track (Bakersfield Speedway) at his hometown in Bakersfield, California.

Twenty-nine
NASCAR Super Late Models showed up for Saturday's nights racing.
The SLM feature began with a pair of two-car crashes that sidelined
Ray Robinson and then Andy Coyle. Second starter Dan Moore grabbed
the lead on the third attempt to start the race. Moore, in his new
car for 2006, led through lap 24 in a three-way battle with pole
starter David Beat and Johnson, who passed Beat for second on lap
13. Sawyer took advantage of the on track action and moved up in
position. Robby Sawyer's best lap of the evening came on lap eight
at a 18.514 at 97.224 miles per hour. Sawyer finished a respectable
13th of the twenty-nine car starting field and continues to improve
each race. Finishing is a huge factor at Irwindale, "Every
week we move one step closer in the right direction", states
crew chief Kelly Sawyer. The NASCAR Super Late Models will race
again next weekend. photo

March 25, 2006: Taking
to the track after two rain outs the NASCAR Super Late Models competed
Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway. Thirty competitors in the
Super Late Models were split into three heat races. Sawyer started
on the pole of the first heat and fell back to third when a yellow
was thrown due to light rain. The heat race was called because of
wet track conditions. The heat races are a new addition on the race
schedule giving the drivers an extra opportunity to earn points.
The evenings main event saw 29 cars take the green flag in the fifty
lap race. Robby Sawyer started 21st in the evenings main event which
saw several cautions. Sawyer drove a lap time of 18.696 at 96.277
miles per hour on lap five making this his fastest lap of the race.
When the checkered fell Sawyer finished 15th in the field.
Post
race interview: "The car was loose off, real loose, and a couple
of times Robby was sideways coming out of turn two, he did a great
job of handling the car and getting it through the traffic and wrecks.
The dirt experience played a major role in tonights performance,
I am very proud he drove the way he did" stated the Crew Chief
Kelly Sawyer. The Super Late Models are scheduled to race again on
April 8th.
