SAWYER FINISHES FOURTH AT BUDWEISER NATIONALS

OCTOBER 7 & 8, 2011

The Bud Nationals is the biggest event of the year at Bakersfield Speedway as it wraps up the Season as the Big Final Show. The two day event drew 40 Modifieds and only the top two from the qualifing heat races would earn an automatic transfer to Saturday's A main event. Robby Sawyer finished second in his heat race Friday night then ran a twelve lap twelve car qualifier to determine staring position for Saturday's A main. Sawyer finished third in the qualifier on Friday which guaranteed him the third starting position in the A main. All other cars that did not qualify would have to race either a C or B main on Saturday.

Saturday night the house was packed at Bakersfield Speedway. It became evident when the green flag fell the crowd would get their money's worth of race action and the top four drivers put on a great show in the modified main. Twenty-two cars started the Modified 40 lap main event. Sawyer started in the third postion and ran third for most of the race as he chased down Bobby Hogge of Salinas and Brad Pounds of Bakersfield. Pounds, Hogge, Sawyer and Dutton pulled away from the rest of the field. There was no room for error by any of the drivers and at times during the race there was some side-by-side challenges and nose to tail racing. From a spectator perspective it was a great race.

There were four cautions during the 40 lap feature and each time on the restart the four drivers would again break away from the rest of the field. On the final caution on lap 33 Robby went into turn one deep and taking it to the high side, this then opened up an opportunity for the #222 of Dutton to get underneath the #198. The final top four finishers were Pounds, Hogge, Dutton and Sawyer. See complete main event finish below.

SAWYER FINISHES SECOND AT BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY

[Robby Sawyer being interviewed in Victory Lane]

July 30, 2011

Bakersfield Speedway had a different agenda for the IMCA modifieds Saturday night as they ran a qualifying schedule with the top six qualifiers competing in a bonus in a Dash for Cash.

Robby Sawyer qualified 3rd fast for the nights racing which placed him in the 6th position in the trophy dash for cash. Sawyer finished fifth in the six lap shoot out.

The twenty-five lap main event had 17 modifieds starting with Sawyer's #198 sitting in the sixth starting position. Sawyer moved to fourth within a couple laps and then an early yellow was thrown because of a car spinning on the track. The remainder of the race went caution free. Sawyer moved into second about lap 13 and with about seven laps to go the #15 of Brad Pounds challenged Sawyer for second place. The leaders caught lapped cars and Sawyer used this to his advantage as he moved through traffic quickly. Sawyer went onto finish second with Kyle Heckman's #11 taking the win. The final results were Heckman, Sawyer, Pounds, Hood an Childriss Jr. rounding out the top five. Robby Sawyer plans to race again in two weeks at Bakersfield Speedway.
